Email can be one of the most significant productivity drains in an insurance agency. I spend a lot of time talking to agency staff about how best to manage an overwhelming amount of email.

My goal every day is to have zero emails in my inbox. I don’t always meet that goal, but I do try. And, it’s not that I have accomplished the tasks generated by an email request. But I have put the email into a trusted place where I know I will get back to that task at the best time.

One of the principles I teach to reduce the sheer number of emails in your inbox is to make sure you only continue to receive those email newsletters that you want and read. Many people store emails in a folder for reading later. When I ask, “Why bother continuing to subscribe if you don’t ever read them?” Many say something to the tune of, “But I have them there, just in case I need them.”

My Invitation to Unsubscribe

I work hard to deliver valuable information in this TechTips newsletter that will help your organization. Many agency staff have been kind and told me via email or in-person that they even look forward to receiving my newsletter. Do you have any idea how rare that is?

But here is the thing: What if you continue to get these emails because it seems like a good idea, but you’re not reading them? You thought it would be a good idea when you signed up but no longer have the time to read it. You’re not doing anything with the information or even like it much anymore.

If that’s you, I want to invite you to unsubscribe. At the bottom of each issue of TechTips, there is an unsubscribe link.

Click that unsubscribe link, choose the reason you are unsubscribing (or ignore that part) and then click on the Remove button. And please don’t choose the “this email is spam” option because you did sign up at one point. That’s it. You’re free. You’re out. You have one less email each week to manage. Even if you just delete the email, that takes time and mental energy.

Go ahead and unsubscribe to those other emails you are no longer reading. Get a little bit of your inbox back. Let’s tell all the various websites, programs, and apps that fill our inbox with notifications that we don’t want to be distracted by them any longer.

I want you to want to be here, to be interested in what we can do together to improve your opportunities and succeed at your goals. And if that means unsubscribing from my newsletter? Then that’s what I want you to do. I want you to stay, but only if the information provided each week helps you do your job just slightly better.

And in your own life, I want the same thing. Let’s start unplugging from the distractions that don’t serve us well anymore. Let’s pull down all the “we thought we were supposed to do ____” stereotypes and focus on doing what works well for us.
